When you think about a good workout, the odds are that you are more likely to imagine working up a good sweat than shivering during exercise. However, it is not uncommon to experience chills or dramatic shivers when you’re doing a cardio workout, particularly in the winter.

The main reason that most people experience shivering during exercise is because of dehydration. This should be seen as a serious sign that you need to make better efforts to keep hydrated throughout your workouts.

If you start shivering during exercise, it’s very important to stop your workout and do something about it. It’s not something that can wait. Trying to power through it can place your health in danger.

Know the signs of dehydration and what you should do about them, even if you’re in the middle of a great workout.

Other than getting the chills and shivers, other common signs of dehydration that can occur during a workout can include: feeling thirsty or dizzy, experiencing muscle cramps, having a headache, becoming fatigued or nauseous, vomiting, turning pale, fainting and having a rapid heartbeat. If you don’t take action to correct dehydration, you can lose consciousness or become delirious. That can progress to heat illness which can be dangerous to your life.

The most important thing to do if you are dehydrated is to replace the electrolytes and fluids you have lost. This means to drink cool – not cold – water before you start exercising as well as throughout your workout. Focus on replenishing your fluids for the rest of the day following a workout.

You may be inclined to have a sports drink after a workout. They do contain electrolytes and if you are prone to dehydration and had a strenuous workout, they may be a good option. However, ignore people who tell you that salt tablets are the way to go to replace electrolytes without the sugar. This is a common myth and it can lead can actually make dehydration worse.

The more you sweat during a workout, the more you need to focus on keeping your fluids and electrolytes up. Don’t forget that just because you’re swimming in a pool, it doesn’t mean you’re not sweating. You just can’t tell because it is continually being washed away. Sip water before, during and after a swim session, too. This is all the more important if you follow your time in the pool with relaxation in a hot tub.
